People ask me why did I choose the ps1 style for the game I’m making, well the reason is because its not just the ps1 style its something else, but I’m going to have to go back a bit and explain where it started.
I was struggling to get Shadows over Lunar Falls off the ground, I couldn’t make my mind up about the style. So I was just sitting at my desk on my lunch and a random song came into my head so I had to find it.
Now this song was only less than a minute and very easy to find but the moment I listened to it, I felt like I was pulled back into the 90s just for those few moments, the only crime is the song is only 30 seconds and the style of the trailer captures what I remember of the 90s.
So when I got home I started to look back at the things I missed from the 90s and realised the media had this period of early 90s to mid 2000s we had things like grunge, industrial metal, goth and nu metal. We had things like The Matrix and Dark City, things that took things to the extreme hell advertising was so epic like, I remember the advert for Tizer it had a guy with the drink being poured into his head.
We had wrestling taken to the max with the Attitude Era, we had games like Doom, Quake then the ps1 came along and we had games like Nightmare Creatures 2, Soul Reaver the music was amazing for those games it didn’t matter for a demographic it was made to be awesome and to blow your mind. The last thing I remember was we had an era where we had games like Fifa Street, Tony Hawk Underground and Need for Speed Underground, our phones were unique, we had winamp which we could customise everything about it, we had Bebo and Myspace. We don’t have that now.
So I was like hold on its been 20 years and we ain’t tried to push things to the max instead we have flat logos, LOADS AND LOADS OF PLASTIC BOXES.
So I was like “Right I’ve got to take what 90s consisted off and try and make things better, make things unique, make things bads” then I found Haunted PS1 demo disk and it took me back to that first demo disk I had with my ps1 and it hit me people are making ps1 style games, how do I make them so I spent a year and a half learning about how they were made.
The 90s was such an awesome decade and its sad to see the progress how things are turning out. But thank you for reading and until next time… Cheerio…
