Gloomwood – The Tavern Review.

Wow, so first of going to hit personal things today, it started amazing and went downhill very quick BUT, a new update was issued to Gloomwood, and boy it didn’t disappoint.

So I’ve been mad about Gloomwood since I got the demo, the whole landscape of the game is intriguing to me and of course one of the most legendary voice actors is involved with the game, from the mechanic of using hardly any with everything from checking your revolver ammo to having to take off your case and drag the item into the world is so unique, I never thought I’d see something like that to the whole Victorian aspect that pulled the heartstrings of my old steampunk days, Gloomwood has been the game I’ve been looking forward to out of everything both Indie and Triple A.

So quickly I’ll give you a review of the early access content of Gloomwood.

Seeing how much it changed from the original demo which I highly recommend playing, its available on GOG.com, both the textures, models and game play mechanics have been drastically improved, the Moon indicator has disappeared, the only way to see if you’ll be noticed is with the ring on your hand which glows if you’re going to be seen, the backpack has changed to the case which flips over to show sword and a few future items. We have 3 new areas to explore, the fishery, the caves and the lighthouse with some little easter eggs which I must say hearing the bell from the demo took me back and its quite haunting to hear it in the distance. We have updated textures for the Folding Shotgun, Revolver which I think is a schofield/new army hybrid. Finally seeing the character we hear at the end of the demo, the reveal of a new Antagonist and of course seeing the new textures of the Crowmen even tho we don’t get to battle them it made the early access worth the wait.

But then there was the Tavern, we only get a slight tease of it, from hearing the creature above us and its roars. Which was finally revealed today. Yet the build up to it has been quite cool from the new Blood Moon difficulty, the hidden cave area and ruins of a church.

So now lets talk about the Tavern, this finally brings in the horror aspect, you’re locked in the tavern with the creature, you see blood dripping through the floorboards. You see the bodies and then the creature, it looks like it took some damage but it doesn’t care. You must either remain in the shadows or hide in the wardrobes, every door is locked so you have to control the beast but then it hunts you, it is literally hide or die that is until you get the shotgun then you can go full John Wick on it but you must be quick because after pumping a certain number of rounds in it, it’ll charge and sprint for you and I can’t forget the music thanks to someone on the New Blood discord they posted the music and man the second track goes hard. It is a level challenging but after the battle and the silence of the tavern you’ll feel a sense of accomplishment and I swear this game hasn’t disappointed.

With the game going early access in September to ending the year with this, I can’t wait to see what 2023 holds for the game, we know its the market next and I’m hoping its the overhaul of the demo level with the Crowmen and finally selling the jewels you find. But one thing I’m really questioning since the tease of the creature in the demo. A sighting of the Corpse Duster, we know nothing of it and I can’t wait for the start of that trail, if its like The Creature’s tease then I think we’re in for a ride.

So below I have put the trailers for both the demo, the early access release date trailer(Its out by the way) and the new Tavern trailer. I’ve also included both the steam page and the creator’s twitter who posts a lot of content about the game.

So till then cheerio and mind the gap.
